5 things YOU can do with Trump as President
History was made.
Shoot! I just just dropped my coffee on the ground and stained my carpet too. Time is a weird aspect of life. It’s both long and short, it’s now and forever, and after a while, it heals. Eventually, I’m fine with that stained carpet.
I don’t care if you’re jubilated about our new president, weary of how you voted and aren’t telling anyone or crying in your ginger matcha green tea feeling like America is the new third Reich. Regardless of what side of the aisle you stand on, we all still get to choose how our days are affected.
The thought patterns we have every day make up our life experience. If you’re looking for a moment of motivation (or for some, healing) you have to listen to this TED Talk from, Peter Diamandis, author of “Bold” and “Abundance.” In it, he describes the moment in time we’re living in being the most peaceful it’s ever been. With cloud capabilities, businesses are drastically more inexpensive to start and technology is creating more manufactured energy than ever before.
These advancements aren’t necessarily due to any president, but rather us being awesome evolving humans. We’re all more educated, and many needs are being met, better than in the past. Of course, there’s room for improvement, but let’s take a big, fat healthy breath in this moment and realize little things we can do today. Here are 5 ideas that will remove you from politics and help balance you out.

Volunteer More
Ultimately, we’re looking for the leader of the free world to help us. It only makes sense, we choose a political stance in the hope our personal lives and community will see an economic increase and higher volumes of happiness. One of the quickest ways to receive this same grateful glow is by spending time fixing your community. There are tons of ways to volunteer. You can spend time at an animal shelter, pick up waste in the street and visit long term care facilities. Volunteering helps boost your LinkedIn profile too. You can find an opportunity that fits here at “Volunteer Match.”
Personally, I’ve spent some great time in Minnesota with a group called Art Buddies.
For me, this was the most moving experience as I worked with a young boy who was asking for a hand in life. At the time,I was striving for a chance to mentor. To date, it’s been the fondest relationship I’ve fostered where I learned the most and felt the most needed. Instant gratification for me.

Perform affirmations, be mindful
Break it down with me. Billions of people in the world. Millions in your state. Thousands in your city or town. Hundreds in your school. Handful in your house. One of you. Who is best equipped to fix and help you? Whether you pray, meditate or perform affirmations, the moments you take for yourself allow for a true understanding of your values and stance on life. If you want to relax, take 5 minutes and feel your breath in and out. Smirk when you notice what you’re doing and don’t be harsh on yourself.
If you think the mind is overthinking and pulling you in all directions, write down a few goals along with 3 things you can do to accomplish them. Then, with a touch of faith and belief, read those over to yourself. These affirmations, if done a few times a day, can rework your whole take on yourself, the people you work with and the person leading our country. You’ll find love. Help your neighbor
This notion is really similar to volunteering but a bit closer to home (literally) and has a cascading effect for you and your family. While we’re all judging what the Joneses are doing to their front lawn and how it’s going to affect the neighborhood, the most fun I’ve had is lending a helping hand. Between me and Dave (the guy next door) we were able to string our Holiday lights 2x faster together than alone. We were being watched and then Barb (the gal next door) offered her tools for assistance. So then we did hers! This was an afternoon effort on a sunny day and we finished off with a beer. We didn’t sign a nuclear war plan but rather directly helped each other. The neighborhood now enjoys three lined homes of colorfully glowing trim.

Seek enlightenment, not fear
Knowledge is power in much of this, but when news sources take a story like the Hamilton cast talking to Mike Pence after a show, your two sides are drastically different. Here’s Fox News’s take, versus, CNN’s take. Both take the story in different ways but ultimately create a healthy divide. Both are attacks, it just depends on which side you favor. This seems to be the enlightenment angle I mean to tackle. Both sides will give you a taste of the facts and then slant the story their way the further you read. You’ve gotta read both sides. If not, your fear for the other side will grow to an unhealthy level. Or, drop news all together and skip to steps four and five!
Bonus step: Do an internal scan of your Facebook and learn the fear tactics outside entities create for users. Both sides of the table post outlandish “meme” takes in order to “inform” their mindless friends. It’s straight fear in most cases, not truth. Bonus step is to get off Facebook.
